VERONA — Luther Prep’s girls cross country team won the Division 3 competition while the Phoenix boys placed third at the Verona Invitational on Saturday.

The Phoenix girls won with a team score of 56 points, beating out Wisconsin Dells (60) and Platteville (71) for top honors.

Junior Maya Habben was the top Division 3 finisher in 21:05. The rest of the point scorers were senior Abby Buege (10th, 22:49), junior Hannah Schroeder (12th, 23:05), sophomore Kate Mensching (13th, 23:09), and junior Katie Butler (20th, 24:00).

In the boys race, Aquinas won a tiebreaker with Platteville for first place after each team scored 63 points. The Phoenix were the next best team with 83 points.

Junior Camden Sulzle (ninth, 18:12), junior Ben Bode (11th, 19:24), junior Caleb Arndt (17th, 18:51), junior Christopher Baumann (20th, 19:12) and junior Ethan Horn (26th, 19:23) scored for Luther Prep.

“Although the rain and muddy course could have been issues for the runners, both the boys and girls stayed focused and completed their mission,” Luther Prep cross country coach Naomi Fritz said.

“It was enjoyable to compete in a new meet for the LPS team. Many of the athletes commented that today was like running a Tough Mudder. The team came home muddy but they seemed to enjoy the challenge. All of these were good experiences.”

Luther Prep competes at the Poynette Invitational on Thursday.
