MLK celebration postponed in Danbury
DANBURY - Monday’s community breakfast and church service to honor civil rights martyr Martin Luther King Jr. at New Hope Baptist Church has been postponed.
Organizers are concerned about weather forecasts affecting Monday’s federal holiday to honor the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
On Friday, organizers had not named a new date for the annual celebration, which in past years has included a featured speaker, choral numbers by a children’s choir and musical numbers by the Danbury High School Jazz Band.
The event is the highlight of the holiday in Danbury, where schools and government offices are closed to honor King’s non-violent fight for justice.
King was assassinated in 1968. James Earl Ray was convicted of the slaying and he died in prison in 1998.
A winter storm warning is in effect from mid-Saturday through Sunday, the National Weather Service said.
