Police Question Teens in Killing of Nine-Year-Old Girl

July 10, 1996

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) _ Police investigating the murder of a 9-year-old girl were questioning a 13-year-old boy Wednesday.

Police also were questioning two 17-year-old youths who were detained Monday. No one has been charged.

The body of Jade Matthews was found Monday on a railway line. Police said she had been beaten to death.

Her father, Alan Priest, 34, was released Tuesday after 30 hours of questioning.

Detective Superintendent Geoff MacDonald said the girl apparently was killed on Friday, sometime after leaving home with three friends.

The girl lived with her mother and step-father in Bootle, a suburb of Liverpool. Bootle was also the home of James Bulger, the 2-year-old boy who was kidnapped and killed by two 10-year-olds in February 1993.
