7 killed in tourist bus accident on Bali

BALI, Indonesia (AP) — A bus plunged into a ravine while traveling on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali, killing seven people including five Chinese tourists, police said Tuesday.

Eight people survived the accident, which occurred on a winding slope near the Pecatu resort area in southern Bali, traffic police chief Col. Beno Louhenapessy said.

Survivors said the vehicle’s engine apparently lost power while going up a hill and rolled backward before falling into a 15-meter (50-foot) -deep ravine, he said.

Police, soldiers and medical officers used ropes and cranes to reach the bus, which was carrying 13 Chinese tourists. Two Indonesians — a tour guide and the driver — were also killed. The other eight Chinese were all hurt, some seriously, and were taken to a hospital.

The bus was headed for Uluwatu, a seaside temple that is a popular tourist attraction. Serious accidents are rare on the relatively well-maintained roads leading to the area’s main resorts.
