Mason Accused of Assaulting Woman

July 13, 2001

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) _ NBA star Anthony Mason has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a hotel and is under investigation, the player’s lawyer said Friday.

The woman says Mason assaulted her this week in Tinton Falls, about 50 miles from Trenton, Mason lawyer Frank Rothman said.

Mason has not been charged, he added, but authorities are looking into the latest accusation against a player who has had previous run-ins with the law.

``The allegations are absurd,″ Rothman said. ``We will cooperate in any matter they choose.″

Tinton Falls police said the woman filed a complaint against Mason and two other men, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported. Police on Friday referred calls to the prosecutor’s office.

Repeated calls by The Associated Press to prosecutor John Kaye were not immediately returned. A call to Mason’s agent, Don Cronson, was not immediately returned.

Mason starred for the Miami Heat last season. The team would not comment.

The 34-year-old forward was in New Jersey for a weeklong basketball exhibition in Belmar. Rothman said Mason frequently plays in summer leagues on the Jersey shore.

In February 2000, Mason and some friends were arrested following a brawl outside a Manhattan nightclub. Mason received probation and community service following a 1989 gun possession charge in New York.

Mason’s NBA career began with New Jersey in 1989. The 6-foot-8 forward played five seasons with the Knicks and was traded to the Charlotte after the 1995-96 season. Mason became a free agent after last season.
