N.J. Family of Five Dies in Fire

June 17, 1991

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) _ A fire that may have started in a kitchen garbage can swept through a home and killed a family of five, officials said.

″We found four of them in a bathroom,″ said police Sgt. Anthony Winchatz. ″They may have been trying to climb out the window.″

Killed before dawn Sunday were Warren Smarook, 36, his wife, Anita, 33, and their children, Angela, 8, Warren Jr., 7, and Jake, 7 months.

″It seems it may have started in a garbage can in the kitchen,″ Winchatz said. ″The contents of an ash tray may have been dumped in there.″
