Palo Alto College scholarship fundraiser raises record $1M
Thanks to a donation of $815,000 from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, a scholarship fundraiser for Palo Alto College this month netted $1 million — more than 14 times its goal of $70,000.
UTRGV donation covers five full-ride scholarships for current Palo Alto students, and scholarships and fee waivers for community college employees and their family members who are looking to pursue online master’s degrees. It also funds five Presidential Graduate Research Assistant positions at the university.
Palo Alto, one of the Alamo Colleges, raised an additional $180,000 at the Nov. 14 event, which was sponsored by UTRGV and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas.
The community college will receive $67,500 in matching funds through two U.S. Department of Education grants.
“The overwhelming support from our partners is a testament to the greatness they see in the work we do,” and that investment will “ultimately change the lives of students in south San Antonio.” said Robert Garza, president of Palo Alto College, in a prepared statement.
