On 4-3 Vote, Lowell Board Terminates School Superintendent
LOWELL -- Four months after starting the process, the Lowell School Committee voted 4-3 to terminate Superintendent Salah Khelfaoui Wednesday night.
Mayor William Samaras and School Committee members Gerry Nutter, Jackie Doherty and Connie Martin supported the motion.
Members Dominik Lay, Robert Hoey Jr. and Andre Descoteaux voted against.
The split mirrors that of the July 18 meeting where the committee first voted to start the process and place Khelfaoui on administrative leave. The initial motions were proposed by Martin and Doherty.
At the meeting Wednesday night two dominant narratives emerged.
Members who opposed Khelfaoui’s continuing employment described a district struggling from financial and other mismanagement. Members who support the superintendent painted a picture of politically-motivated maneuverings, which unfairly victimized Khelfaoui.
The vote was followed by an executive session to consider releasing executive session minutes involving the contemplated termination of Khelfaoui.
