High schools: Outside the Box, Sept. 28

September 27, 2018

From inside the lines to out, Express-News staff writer Terrence Thomas takes a look back and a look ahead at the high school sports landscape:

Figure this

750: Career wins for Churchill volleyball coach Jo Anne Hultgren, who reached the milestone with the Chargers’ five-set victory Tuesday over Johnson in District 27-6A play. Hultgren has 449 wins and two UIL Class 6A state tournament appearances (2013, 2014) in 14 seasons at Churchill. She previously coached at Judson, where she guided the Rockets to 301 wins and the 1997 regional final in 15 seasons.

1,000: Career kills for Devine senior Sierra Pompa, who accomplished the feat during the Arabians’ district-opening win over Carrizo Springs on Sept. 21.

Odds and ends

Historical repeat: Johnson senior Garrett Martin fired a two-round 134 to win the prestigious 21st annual Bart Granger Memorial tournament in Fort Worth on Sept. 21. He is the first golfer to win the event in consecutive years.

A Texas Tech commit and the 2018 Express-News boys player of the year, Martin carded rounds of 69 and 65 to finish the tournament at 8-under. The event was shortened to two rounds because of inclement weather. A year ago, Martin shot a course-record 61 in the final round to prevail.

Johnson, paced by Martin, third-place finisher Johnny Keefer (68-71-139), a Baylor commit and 2018 E-N All-Area selection, and Josh Lim (72-71-143), who was 17th, finished first in the 52-team field with a school-record score of 567 (280-287). Brophy Prep from Arizona was second by one stroke.
