Chain-reaction crash leaves 1 critically injured, many hurt
EDISON, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a chain-reaction crash on a major New Jersey highway has left one person seriously injured and several others hurt.
The crash on Route 1 southbound in Edison occurred around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. Authorities say a tractor-trailer rear-ended a minivan that was stopped in rush-hour traffic, setting off a crash that eventually involved six other vehicles.
Middlesex County prosecutors initially reported Wednesday that one person had been killed in the crash, but they announced Thursday that there were no fatalities.
One person hurt in the crash remained hospitalized Thursday in critical but stable condition. Several other people were treated at the hospital for minor undisclosed injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities say a stretch of the roadway was shuttered for several hours.
This story has been corrected to show that prosecutors originally reported one person died in the crash, but later said no one died.
