Wheels on the bus go ‘round and ’round on practice run
PICAYUNE, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi community is trying to make the first day of school less scary for young children.
School buses for the Pearl River County School District ran practice routes last week.
The Picayune Item reports that kindergartners and their parents were given rides to Pearl River County Lower Elementary School. They were greeted by cheerleaders, and the principal talked about what to expect during the school year that begins Aug. 6.
On the way home, bus drivers discussed evacuation procedures, emergency exits, what to do if a stranger boards the bus and how to act on the bus during bad weather.
District Transportation Director Lisa Beech says the practice run was designed to alleviate fears for children and parents.
