Dice Flavor wins La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar
DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Dice Flavor edged Den’s Legacy by a half-length Saturday in the Grade II $150,000 La Jolla Handicap for 3-year-olds at Del Mar.
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Dice Flavor ran 1 1/16 miles on the turf course in 1.39.82 and paid $19.80, $9.20 and $5.40.
It was Gomez’s first race after being fined $1,000 and suspended for missing his scheduled mounts while being treated for a relapse of alcohol problems.
“This is special. It eases some of the pain,” Gomez said. “I’m so happy to be back.”
Dice Flavor sliced between horses entering the stretch, and outran Den’s Legacy.
“The trip was good,” Gomez said. “I was a little wide coming out of the chute, but the rest was good.”
The win, worth $90,000, raised Dice Flavor’s career earnings to $274,500.
Den’s Legacy returned $9.60 and $5.80, and Pure Loyalty paid $5.60 to show.
The La Jolla Handicap is the prelude to the championship-deciding Grade II $300,000 Del Mar Derby on Sept. 1.
