Florida 70, No. Carolina-Charlotte 69

December 21, 1992

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Jermaine Carlton led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points and Florida made 13 of 16 free throws in the last 10 minutes to offset poor field-goal shooting and beat North Carolina-Charlotte 70-69 Sunday night.

Scott Stewart made two foul shots with 9.5 seconds left to give Florida (4-1) a 70-66 lead, and UNCC (3-4) closed to within a point on Rodney Odom’s 3-point shot at the buzzer.

Florida made only three field goals in the final 9:11 and Carlton, who was averaging only 3 points per game, had two of them. Meanwhile, the Gators hit six consecutive free throws to open a 59-49 lead before UNCC began to recover from a slow second-half start.

The 49ers were held to a pair of 3-point shots by Andre Davis and Bershuan Thompson in the first 9:58 after halftime but were able stay in the game by playing defense as well as Florida, which shot only 39 percent in the second half.

But Carlton hit 6 of 7 shots from the field and was 3 for 3 at the foul line in 16 minutes. Stacey Poole added 14 points and Martii Kuisma and Andrew DeClercq had 13 and 11 for the Gators.

Jarvis Lang scored 16 points for UNCC, but the 49ers’ chance for a victory faded when Poole missed a shot from the corner and the rebound bounced off Lang’s shoulder and out of bounds with 11.6 seconds left.

Davis came off the bench to lead UNCC with 18 points, including a jumper that cut Florida’s lead to 66-65 with just under four minutes to go. Odom finished with 14 points and Thompson had 10 for the 49ers.

The game was the second-half of a ″challenge″ format doubleheader at Orlando Arena. No. 10 Florida State, which beat UNCC 63-59 on Saturday night, defeated Temple 90-81 in overtime earlier Sunday.
