Mendy Keeps WBA Lightweight Title
PARIS (AP) _ France’s Jean-Baptiste Mendy retained the WBA lightweight championship Monday, outpointing Argentina’s Alberto Sicurella.
Mendy won on a unanimous decision, receiving votes of 118-110, 117-112, 116-111 from the three judges.
With a four inch height disadvantage, Sicurella had difficulty landing punches against the 5-foot-10 southpaw.
In a frantic final round, Sicurella attacked furiously in an attempt to gain the victory, but the champion held on.
Mendy rocked Sicurella in the sixth with a sharp left jab and right hook.
Sicurella (47-2) was in trouble again in the 11th, but stayed on his feet and connected with a pair of rights that had Mendy reeling.
Sicurella had his best round in the fifth, landing a series of blows to the head.
Mendy (53-2-7) was making the first defense of the title he won last May by outpointing Orzubek Nazarov of Russia.
Mendy previously held the WBC lightweight title from April 1996-March 1997.
Each fighter weighed 134 pounds.
