COVINGTON, La. (AP) — An 11-year-old Louisiana girl has died two days after she was injured in a fire at the home where she lived with her grandfather.

The Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office says the fire happened early Tuesday near Covington.

NOLA.com/The Times Picayune reports the girl and her 12-year-old brother were airlifted to University Medical Center in New Orleans and later transferred to Children’s Hospital.

The girl died Thursday.

The fire marshal says boy is in critical condition. Their 74-year-old grandfather has been released from a hospital.

Authorities did not release the family’s names.

The fire marshal said in a news release that the grandfather was awakened by popping noises and saw the fire. He escaped through a window, then broke another window to pull his granddaughter out. Emergency responders rescued the boy.
