November 6, 1999

JAMMU, India (AP) _ A bus plunged 500 feet into a gorge in mountainous Jammu-Kashmir state on Saturday, killing at least 50 passengers, police said.

Most victims were on their way home to join their families for Hindu festival celebrations on Sunday.

Eight seriously injured passengers were hospitalized in Kathua district, 100 miles northeast of Jammu, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir state, said S.P. Vaid, deputy inspector-general of police.

The bus was carrying 60 people, two of whom escaped unhurt. The accident occurred when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp turn, Vaid said.
