Aetna has renewed its contract with UPMC, keeping the hospital system in its Western Pennsylvania insurance networks through 2021, according to a Thursday news release.

Aetna covers about 1.2 million Pennsylvanians in its commercial and Medicare Advantage networks, according to the release. UPMC has more than 30 hospitals in the western and central regions of the state.

The agreement doesn’t apply to individual health care plans sold through the Affordable Care Act, since Aetna stopped selling those plans in Pennsylvania in 2017.

The announcement follows a state Supreme Court ruling two weeks ago that Highmark’s Medicare Advantage patients will lose in-network access to UPMC hospitals at the end of June 2019, when a state-brokered consent decree between UPMC and Highmark expires.
