Houston designers open jewel box of a home decor shop
There’s a jewel box of shop on the edge of River Oaks, brimming with things so cute that you stare at them and imagine where they’ll go in your home or who you’ll want to wrap them up for.
It’s Paloma & Co., the new shop co-owned by interior designer Paloma Contreras, and her design pal Devon Liedtke. Contreras, a teacher-turned-blogger-turned interior designer, published her first book — “Dream Design Live” — in 2018 and then in January quietly opened the shop with her former colleague.
The two young women envisioned the home decor shop in a little white house that’s part of the collection of Matt Camron creative cottages as one full of things that they love in a variety of price points, from cute little porcelain bud vases ($27) you might buy for yourself and sets of linen cocktail napkins ($30) to ikat print pillows ($175-$200), plaster framed mirrors ($1,400-$1,800) and original art by Southern artists (variety of prices).
Set up in small vignettes that are constantly changing — check out their Instagram account at shoppalomaandco — there’s a gift nook, with shelves and a small table brimming with items like tableware, handmade tumblers and pottery.
Check out the SoH (Sense of Home) brand candles at $65 each; the Agape Black and Libertine are their best sellers. Agape Black is a soft mixture of oak wood, leather, moss and patchouli — it smells much better than you think leather and moss will — and Libertine is a sunny mix of orange blossom leaves, flowers and twigs.
Vintage and antique chests, tables and benches are scattered about, surfaces filled with coffee table books, chinoiserie jars and lamps from Bunny Williams Home.
Contreras and Liedtke will have an e-commerce site set up in the spring, but for now you can shop in person in the store at 2705 Bammel Lane. Store hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
