Flyers Sign Defenseman Therien

September 9, 2000

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Defenseman Chris Therien signed a four-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, leaving the team with all its players signed for this season.

Therien, Eric Desjardins and Dan McGillis were the Flyers’ core defenseman last season. Therien had four goals and nine assists in 80 games.

``I expect big things,″ Therien said. ``We’re looking to pick up right where we left off.″

The Flyers are still negotiating with left wing John LeClair. He becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season and has set a deadline of Sunday for working out an extension.

``You always feel optimistic because with the amount of money involved, you wonder how it couldn’t get done,″ team president Bob Clarke said.
