Former Arkansas 1B Gates signs with Orioles

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Former Arkansas first baseman Jared Gates has signed a minor league free agent contract with the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the 10th Razorbacks player to sign a professional contract since last month’s major league draft.

Gates went undrafted by major league teams, but he’s the second former Arkansas player to sign with Baltimore. Right-handed pitcher Blaine Knight was a third-round draft pick of the Orioles.

The left-handed hitting Gates was a key part of the Razorbacks runner-up finish at the College World Series, hitting .291 during Arkansas’ postseason run. For the season, he hit .241 with six home runs and 23 RBIs.

Prior to playing his last two seasons at Arkansas, Gates spent two years at Iowa Western Community College and was a second team All-American.
