Canadian dies after jumping off Jamaica sea cliffs
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — A Canadian vacationer has died after jumping off seaside cliffs in a western Jamaican beach town and hitting rocks, police said Wednesday.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force on Wednesday identified the dead tourist as 26-year-old Taylor Rankine. They said he was from Ontario but could not provide his hometown.
The High Commission of Canada in Jamaica did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.
Investigators in the tourist town of Negril said Rankine apparently was aiming to land in the sea on Tuesday when he jumped from coastal cliffs. He was among a group of companions.
They believe the Canadian miscalculated his jump and hit rocks. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Negril is well-known for cliff jumping and diving. Some tourist businesses built alongside rocky cliffs market themselves with images of revelers hurling themselves off 40-foot drops into crystal waters below.
It was not immediately clear if Rankine jumped at a resort property or hiked to other rocky cliffs that fringe Negril’s famed west end.
