U.S. Mail Makes Air Strike Plans

August 26, 1998

WASHINGTON (AP) _ With the possibility of a strike at Northwest Airlines, the Postal Service was making other plans for the millions of pieces of mail that airline carries daily.

Northwest hauls about 700,000 pounds of mail daily from hubs in Minneapolis-St. Paul; Detroit and Memphis, Tenn., and throughout its network.

The Postal Service said Wednesday that it has activated its national and area mail control centers to monitor the flow of mail and correct any problems that occur.

If there is a Northwest strike, plans have been made to shift that mail to truck, railroads and other air carriers, the agency said.
