Four-Year-Old Boy Dies Saving Brother

May 24, 1989

CANTON, Miss. (AP) _ A 4-year-old boy died while saving his infant brother from a fire in the family’s mobile home, according to the firefighters who found them.

Richard Henry and 7-week-old Darrin Henry weren’t breathing when prisoners working as volunteer firefighters found the boys under a bed while searching a smoke-filled back bedroom Tuesday at a trailer park west of Canton, in central Mississippi, authorities said.

″It appeared that the 4-year-old had put the infant under the bed first,″ said Allen Nations, who trained as a firefighter and emergency medical technician with the Canton Fire Department while serving a 19-year sentence at Madison County Community Work Center for drug convictions.

Officials said Richard died from smoke inhalation. Darrin was quickly revived but was in critical but stable condition today at a Jackson hospital.

″They believe he’s going to be all right,″ said Arthur Luckett of Canton, the boy’s uncle.

Everette Adcock, who helped find the children under the bed, said he had been taught in training that children often go under beds or into closets to escape smoke.

″I felt under the bed and the first thing I felt was the infant’s head,″ said Adcock, who is serving a four-year sentence for burglary. ″I feel like I did something right today.″

A Fire Department spokesman said it would take several days to determine the casuse of the blaze. No other injuries were reported.
