Sparks 70, Sting 62
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ Mwadi Mabika scored 21 points and Lisa Leslie had 20 as the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Charlotte Sting 70-62 on Sunday night.
The victory put the Sparks (6-2) into second place in the WNBA’s Western Division, two games behind the three-time defending champion Houston Comets. The Sparks will play the Comets on Tuesday night at the Great Western Forum.
Charlotte rookie Summer Erb had season highs of 21 points and eight rebounds. Andrea Stinson added 13 points for the Sting (1-8), and Dawn Staley had 11.
Los Angeles used three first-half runs to take control. The Sparks used a 12-2 spurt to move ahead 19-8 with 12:25 remaining. Mabika led the spree with five points.
Charlotte narrowed its deficit to 19-12 before Allison Feaster scored all seven points during a 7-0 run that extended the Sparks’ lead to 26-12.
The Sting closed within five at 28-23 with 3:04 left in the half, but DeLisha Milton’s jumper and Mabika’s 3-pointer basket gave Los Angeles a 33-23 advantage two minutes before halftime.
Charlotte, which committed 22 turnovers, got no closer than six points in the second half.
