Point Judith Light re-lit after malfunction repaired
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (AP) — It was dark for about three weeks, but now the Point Judith Light is shining again.
A Coast Guard official tells The Providence Journal that the light was re-lit Friday afternoon after a malfunction was repaired.
The lighthouse has overlooked the western entrance of Narragansett Bay and guided boaters and ship captains since 1856. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It replaced the first Point Judith lighthouse, which was built in 1810 and was destroyed by a hurricane in 1815.
The Coast Guard says there were no reports of shipwrecks in the area since the light malfunctioned.
