Stanton sweeps to third in Class C2

November 12, 2018

LINCOLN — In a match most people expected to be played some 70 blocks away at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Stanton made short work of Superior here at Lincoln Northeast High School with a 25-12, 25-18 and 25-17 sweep.

The teams began the Class C2 state volleyball tournament as the top two seeds, but both were upset in the semifinals to end up in the consolation game.

The Mustangs took advantage of playing together one last time.

“We talked about just letting it all go here today,” Stanton senior Jessie Brandl said. “We wanted to end the season the right way and play together one last time.”

Brandl ended up with a double-double, posting a match-high 14 kills and 18 digs.

Teammate and fellow senior Bree Burtwistle agreed with Brandl.

“We wanted to go out there and have fun,” Burtwistle said. “Most of us have been playing volleyball together since the third-grade — we definitely wanted to go out on top.”

Stanton took care of business from the opening serve and didn’t let up until Brandl’s 14th kill, this one off a Wildcat touch, found the court on the other side of the net in the final set.

“I told them to just ‘unleash the beast’ and have some fun today,” Mustang coach Tracy Kuester-Burtwistle said. “Its really great we played so well in the final game — we’re one of two teams in Class C2 that won its final match of the season.”

The Mustangs closed out the opening run to 25 with a run of 4-1.

Leading 22-11, Ellie Locke hit a winner before Superior committed a hitting error to make it 23-11.

Liz Christensen followed with an ace serve and after a Superior kill, the Wildcats were called for being in the net and Stanton took the set 25-12.

The next two sets were more of the same as the Mustangs dominated the consolation match.

“We really set the tone that first set,” Kuester-Burtwistle said. “We really had it together today — I was so happy for our players to finish the season that way.”
