Mary Rohmiller

Carlsbad, Calif., formerly Sioux City

Mary Bridget Burke Rohmiller, 79, of Carlsbad, formerly of Sioux City, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018.

A rosary will be 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bakersfield, Calif., followed by the service. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mary Bridget Burke Rohmiller was born on Oct. 29, 1938, in Sioux City, to Paul and Margaret (Rial) Burke, the third of three children. Mary was raised in Sioux City. She was from a humble background and was raised Shanty Irish. She traveled often to her grandmother’s farm in Fort Dodge (Barnum), Iowa, which is a small town composed of Irish-American farmers. She started working at the age of 14 at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City. She graduated from Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City and attended Briar Cliff University in Sioux City.

In the summer of 1960, she married her high school sweetheart, Ronald E. Rohmiller. Their honeymoon was spent traveling to Bakersfield, where Ron had recently relocated to practice public accounting. Their early years were humble and lean as Ron was starting his accounting practice. Mary worked secretarial jobs until they started their family.

Mary was an active member of the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Young Ladies Institute, Children’s Home Society, Bakersfield Country Club, Garces Parents Club, and supported several other organizations. She was involved in their daughters’ activities. Throughout the years, Mary’s family was the center of her life. Mary and Ron enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, Canada and the U.S. They traveled to many places, particularly where there was a golf course, and spent time at their condo in San Diego, Calif. They took pleasure in entertaining family and friends in their home. After Ron’s passing, Mary continued to travel and spent time in Russia, Europe, Alaska and most recently Ireland. Mary’s faith was important to her.

She is survived by daughters, Bridget Rohmiller of San Diego, Annette Adlard of Visalia, Calif., and Peggy Swanson and husband, David of San Diego; grandchildren, Jason Adlard of Visalia, and Tanner Adlard of South Orange, N.J.; brother, John Burke; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Ronald Eugene; 9-year old daughter, Katherine “Katie”; her mother and father; and brother, Tom Burke.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Mary to Garces Memorial High School or Our Lady of Perpetual Help School.
