Gunman Injures One, Holds One Hostage At Carthage Plant
CARTHAGE, Texas (AP) _ One man was shot and at least one was being held hostage Monday by a former employee of a plastic cup manufacturing plant, officials said.
The gunman and his hostage were in a downstairs office at Carthage Cup Co., said Sherri Deatherage Green, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety.
Negotiation were continuing in the afternoon, she said.
Ms. Green said the unidentified man, who had worked in the plant’s warehouse, entered the plant’s office at about 10:30 a.m. and asked to see someone, then walked back to another office. She did not know the name of the person he asked after.
A receptionist then heard shots, she said.
Ernest McNeill, personnel manager for Carthage Cup Co., was shot in the abdomen and leg. He was in intensive care at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.
Carthage Cup, in this community 60 miles east of Tyler, employs about 130 people making plastic cups, officials said.
