Police Officer Charged With Rape
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) _ A decorated veteran of the city police force was charged Saturday with raping a woman who had called for police help.
Charles Warwick, 29, was arraigned before a district justice in nearby Hanover Township on charges of rape, indecent assault and official oppression. He was released after posting $25,000 bail.
Warwick, who was decorated in 1987 and was one of two officers attached to the city’s K-9 dog unit, was indefinitely suspended from his duties Friday, said police Chief Joseph Coyne.
In an affidavit filed with the district justice, a 36-year-old woman said she called for police Wednesday night because her drunk boyfriend was threatening her and a friend.
Another officer took the boyfriend into custody, while Warwick stayed behind saying he would comfort the woman, according to the affidavit. The woman claimed that Warwick, who lives down the street from her, raped her later that night.
