FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) _ Gov. Ernie Fletcher was hospitalized for what doctors believe may be gall stones, his spokeswoman said Monday.

The Republican governor was taken to the emergency room Sunday afternoon and will have an ultrasound Monday, spokeswoman Jodi Whitaker said. Doctors say his condition has improved since he was hospitalized, she said.

The ultrasound won't involve an anesthetic that would render the Fletcher incapable of performing his duties, according to his personal physician, Whitaker said. Still, precautionary preparations were made for a temporary transfer of power from Fletcher to Lt. Gov. Steve Pence.

Fletcher, a physician, is 53 and in his first term as governor.
