CORINTH, Miss. (AP) — A former treasurer with a Mississippi volunteer fire department has pleaded guilty to an embezzlement charge.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports 39-year-old Barbara Ellen Fair entered the plea Monday and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. However, the sentence was suspended and Fair was placed on supervised probation for five years. Fair was a treasurer with the Southwest Volunteer Fire Department in Alcorn County.

According to an indictment, Fair improperly handled more than $25,000 that was put into her possession while she served as the treasurer of the fire department. The crime occurred between 2014 and December 2015.

Fair was also ordered to pay restitution of over $21,000 to the fire department.
