Tornado in Michigan Knocks Down House

August 22, 2003

A tornado skipped across central and southeastern Michigan, knocking down a house and damaging many other buildings and vehicles, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

Multiple sightings of the tornado Thursday night were reported in Ingham and Livingston counties.

The tornado knocked down a home with several people inside near Stockbridge in Leroy Township, said sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Filice. He said the occupants escaped unharmed.

The tornado forced the 10 patrons and staff at the Bloated Goat Saloon in Fowlerville into the bar’s basement.

``They blew the siren,″ said Lori Smyth, a server. ``It got pretty intense, the rain and wind.″

The group spent about five minutes below ground before returning to the bar, Smyth said.

When the storm swept through Williamston, several passing motorists sought shelter and refreshment inside Spag’s Bar and Grill, bartender Ryan Ranspach said.

``It was real weird looking,″ Ranspach said. ``It was green looking and then turned orange.″

Having just experienced the eight-state power outage last week, the employees got nervous when the lights flickered a couple of times, he said. But the power remained on, and the rain then eased off.
