Mo. Southern 35, Ark.-Monticello 14

MONTICELLO, Ark. (AP) _ Josh Chapman completed all eight of his passes, including two for touchdowns, as Missouri Southern beat Arkansas Monticello 35-14 in the season opener Saturday.

The Boll Weevils led 14-7 at the half but Chapman hit Larry Crenshaw for a 25-yard touchdown at the 7:50 mark of the third quarter. Kevin LaRue intercepted an Arkansas-Monticello pass and returned it seven yards for a touchdown with 29 seconds to go in the period.

Chapman hit Ray Davie from five yards out for a TD with 1:17 gone in the fourth quarter for a 28-14 lead. Shawn Williams capped the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run with 1:39 to play.

Chapman finished 8-for-8 for 97 yards and no interceptions. Missouri Southern got a 6-for-10 performance from Seth McKinzie, who threw for 73 yards. Joey Ballard caught 7 passes for 70 yards for Missouri Southern.

Antonio Whitney, who ran for a 30-yard touchdown for Missouri Southern in the first quarter, finished with 89 yards on 14 carries.

Kevin McCarn went 12-for-30 for 140 yards and two interceptions for Arkansas Monticello and John McMurry was 4-for-8 for 66 yards and one interception. McCarn rushed one yard for a TD with 50 seconds to play in the second quarter for the 14-7 Boll Weevil lead. Kevin Craft had field goals of 35 and 25 yards in the first half for the Boll Weevils.

Roderick Amey caught six passes for 80 yards for and Eric McGehee led the Boll Weevils with 21 yards on 10 carries. Missouri Southern gained 167 yards on the ground to 61 for Arkansas Monticello.
