Michigan St-Indiana Preview Capsule

September 20, 2018

No. 24 Michigan State (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) at Indiana (3-0, 0-0), 7:30 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network).

Line: Michigan State by 4.

Series record: Michigan State leads 47-15-2.

WHAT’S AT STAKE?

The Spartans have not looked like the highly ranked team they were expected to be through two games and a road win certainly would help the cause. Indiana has played well out of the gate but only has one 4-0 start since 1991. Reclaiming the Old Brass Spittoon would go a long way to putting the Hoosiers in the Big Ten East conversation.

KEY MATCHUP

Michigan State’s run defense vs. Indiana RB Stevie Scott. Through two games, the Spartans have yielded an FBS-low 34.5 yards rushing per game. This week, they face Scott, a 235-pound freshman who plowed through Virginia for 204 yards and 114 against a Ball State defense that held Notre Dame in check.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Michigan State: QB Brian Lewerke. He’s ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten in yards passing (300.5 per game) and total offense (310.0 per game). He’s completed 69 percent of his throws and now faces the league’s No. 1 pass defense.

Indiana: Scott. Since losing their top two runners before the second game, Scott has been impressive. His 129.3 yards per game are tied for No. 8 in the FBS, and he won the conference’s top freshman award each of the past two weeks.
