November 5, 1990

TOKYO (AP) _ A Japanese car maker said Monday it is providing technical assistance in a venture with China.

Suzuki Motor Co., Japan’s top minicar maker, plans to assist in production starting Tuesday in China on a version of its Alto model, a five-door hatchback, said Suzuki spokesman Masafumi Yayoshi.

Negotiations for the production at the China Changan Machine Building Plant have been underway for the past two years, Yayoshi said.

The Chinese plant now manufactures Suzuki’s Carry model, a lightweight commercial vehicle, with technical assistance from Japan, he said.

China has been producing cars under joint ventures with foreign firms, including Volkswagen and Peugeot.

Through technical assistance agreements, Daihatsu Motor Co. produces three car models in China, whose total production was 18,398 last year, according to a company spokesman.

Toyota Motor Co. will begin offering technological assistance to China on car exteriors starting late next year, said company spokesman Toshiyuki Hirooka.
