City of Akron opens overnight warming center at Mason Park Community Center

AKRON, Ohio — Akron residents seeking warmth and shelter Wednesday and Thursday can stay overnight at the Mason Park Community Learning Center at 700 East Exchange St.

The center will be open for 24 hours beginning Wednesday, Jan. 30 and will remain open to the public until 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31.

Akron police officers and Park and Recreation Department employees will work at the center during the extended hours to ensure the safety and comfort of individuals using the venue.

The United Way and Red Cross will provide complimentary warm beverages, cots and bedding to people staying at the facility.

METRO Regional Transit Authority will offer free rides to the 24-hour warming center after 10 p.m.

Three additional warming centers will have extended hours during the extreme cold temperatures.

Patterson Park, Summit Lake and Lawton Street Community Centers will be open from 8:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

City police officers and Continuum of Care workers will check on homeless encampments and provide free transportation to warming centers this week.
