Mo. To Celebrate Mark McGwire Day

September 9, 1998

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Mark McGwire now has a day all his own.

Gov. Mel Carnahan, less than 24 hours after McGwire’s 62nd homer, said that Monday will be Mark McGwire Day in Missouri.

``Mark’s phenomenal accomplishment is overshadowed only by his humility, grace and dedication to America’s pastime,″ Carnahan said. ``He is truly a wonder to watch and the people of Missouri are very proud that St. Louis is his baseball home.″

Chris Sifford, Carnahan’s spokesman, said the governor missed the home run because of a dinner in the governor’s mansion.

``He was getting updates of the at-bats and he was alerted immediately that McGwire had hit his home run,″ said Sifford, adding updates were provided by the governor’s staff.

Carnahan will travel to St. Louis Monday to present McGwire, a native of Southern California, with a proclamation.

The governor is expected to be at the Cardinals game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

``It is a cause for celebration and we want to welcome Mark back to St. Louis with a proclamation that lets him know how much we care about him,″ Carnahan said.
