Angolan Army Kills Rebel Leader

LUANDA, Angola (AP) _ The army has killed UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi, who has led the rebel group’s fight for power in Angola for more than 30 years, the army and government said in a joint statement Friday.

The statement, read on state radio and television, said Savimbi died during an army attack on UNITA forces in southeast Angola without giving an exact location or time.

There was no independent confirmation of the claim.
