Woman Sentenced to Death for Murdering Little Girl During Robbery
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) _ A judge Tuesday sentenced a 20-year-old woman to die in the gas chamber for fatally stabbing a 9-year-old girl while robbing a home to get drug money.
Orange County Superior Court Judge Ted Millard upheld a jury’s recommendation that Maria del Rosio Alfaro, a mother of four, be put to death for murdering Autumn Wallace in June 1990.
The girl was stabbed dozens of times when Ms. Alfaro, who knew Autumn’s sister, entered her Anaheim house when the girl was there alone.
During her trial, Ms. Alfaro insisted that a male accomplice forced her to stab the girl several times. She claimed she fled the house and the unidentified man then killed Autumn.
But evidence presented during the trial showed that only Ms. Alfaro’s fingerprint was found in the bathroom where the girl was killed. A bloody footprint also matched the sole of the shoes Ms. Alfaro wore that day.
