NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) — Authorities in Delaware say a New York man used a box cutter to assault an elderly woman who declined to give him a ride.

Citing a Delaware State Police release, The News Journal reports the 80-year-old woman was leaving a store Friday morning when she was asked for a ride and then assaulted by 30-year-old Shawn R. Hollowood.

Police say people in the parking lot came to the woman's aid as Hollowood fled into nearby woods. She was treated onsite for an injury to her wrist.

Around two hours later, New Castle County police received a call about a man with self-inflicted injuries, who was later identified as the woman's assailant.

He was treated at a hospital and then arrested on charges including attempted carjacking. It's unclear whether he has a lawyer.
