Boulder County District Attorney Issues Scam Warning
The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office is warning residents about an uptick in complaints regarding phony extortion letters and emails demanding payment in bitcoins.
The office announced in a news release that residents reported receiving letters from an unknown person claiming they know “secrets” about the recipient and threatening to tell family members unless a payment in bitcoin is sent. The messages will contain instructions on how to send bitcoin payments.
Another version of the scam involves a recipient receiving an email saying his or her computer or email account has been compromised or the sender has video of illicit activity taken off the would-be victim’s computer. Residents have reported that the scammers have figured out old passwords from unused accounts.
The DA’s office asks residents to not send money or respond to the emails and report the scam to the authorities.
