Flora wins spelling bee with ‘cuisinier’

Grant Flora is the winner of the 65th annual Journal Gazette Regional Spelling Bee presented by STAR Financial Bank.

The 14-year-old West Noble Middle School 8th-grader correctly spelled “cuisinier” in the 45th round of the contest. A cuisinier is a cook or chef.

Flora was among 15 county spelling bee champions from northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio competing today at Purdue Fort Wayne’s Rhinehart Music Center.

As winner of the regional spelling bee, Flora will represent The Journal Gazette and STAR Financial Bank at the 92nd annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.

Flora also will receive a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online, The Samuel Louis Sugarman Award, and a one-year membership to Encyclopedia Britannica Online Premium.

Students who competed in the regional bee range in age from 10 to 14 and from fifth to eighth grade. Other competitors, their county and school were:
