Huskers Nix 2001 Home Track Season
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Delays in building a new track prompted the University of Nebraska to cancel their regular-season home schedule for 2001.
But the track team expects to play host to the Big 12 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled in Lincoln on Feb. 23-24.
The Nebraska men and women swept the Big 12 indoor and outdoor team titles in 2000.
Nebraska has reshuffled its 2001 indoor schedule to include three road meets at Kansas State and one apiece at Iowa State and Northern Iowa.
Installing part of the $3 million project will not begin until October or early November, coach Gary Pepin said, leaving the Cornhuskers without an indoor training facility until at least January.
``It’s a big deal for us,″ Pepin said. ``Not only will we have to travel a lot more, but we have no idea where we’re going to train.″
The indoor track was scheduled for installation last year. But contractor bids did not fit under the $2.98 million cap set by the Board of Regents and officials delayed the project for one year.
Last season, Nebraska competed at home indoors five times, including the 26th annual Husker Invitational, which usually is held the second weekend of February.
