Man headbutts Cleveland police officer while being arrested, runs away, police say

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A man headbutted a Cleveland police officer arresting him for violating a protection order.

Lorenzo Wilkins, 32, is charged with assaulting a police officer, a fourth-degree felony. He is being held in the Cuyahoga County Jail on $25,000 bond after his first court appearance on Wednesday.

Wilkins on Saturday went to his mother’s house on East 121st Street in the city’s Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood. His mother has a protection order that bans her son from being near her because of a domestic violence case.

The woman called police after Wilkins showed up at her home. He ran away. Officers verified the woman’s protection order and searched the neighborhood for Wilkins, police reports say.

Officers went looking for Wilkins and found that he returned to his mother’s home about 20 minutes later, police reports say.

He told the officers that she owed him money. The officers went to arrest him for violating the protection order when Wilkins “viciously” headbutted the officer and shoved him, court records say.

Wilkins led police on a foot chase. Officers caught up with Wilkins and arrested him. He threatened to kill his mother and the officers when he’s released from jail, police reports say.

The officer was treated for his injuries.
