Three Men Move One Step Closer To Priesthood Today
Three local men will be ordained as transitional deacons this weekend as part of their journey to become Catholic priests for the Diocese of Scranton.
Bishop Joseph Bambera will conduct the ordination on Saturday for Jonathan P. Kuhar, Kevin M. Miller and Shawn M. Simchock.
The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Jude Church in Wright Twp., Kuhar’s home parish.
Ordination as a transitional deacon generally occurs after a seminarian has completed at least three years of study in theology and takes place usually one year prior to priestly ordination, the Diocese said in a press release.
As deacons, the men will be able to preside at weddings, assist priests at Mass, proclaim the Gospel and preach. They also will be able to preside at wakes and funeral services.
Kuhar is from St. Jude Parish in Mountain Top and is studying at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland.
Miller is from St. Nicholas Parish in Wilkes-Barre. Simchock is from Queen of Heaven Parish in Hazleton. Both Miller and Simchock study at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts.
