Sylvia Garcia: Dems’ multiple investigations isn’t about ‘one president, it’s about our democracy’
Rep. Sylvia Garcia addressed concerns Thursday that the Democrats’ multiple investigations into President Trump could hurt their party politically in upcoming elections: “It’s about our democracy.”
“There is a factor of that, that we have to consider, but what I think is important is this really is not about the polls, it’s not about politics, it’s not even about this one president. It’s about our democracy. It’s about the check and balances. It’s about the way our entire system works,” the Texas Democrat said on CNN’s “Newsroom” show.
“If we had everyone start ignoring subpoenas that they got at any court at any level, what would happen to our justice system,” she said. “I think we need to look at the big picture, and I really cannot focus just on a poll. We’ve got to look at the whole thing.”
The pollreferencedshowed a rise in people saying Democrats wereinvestigating the president “too much,” showing a 6-point rise from 38 percent in March to 44 percent in April.
House Democrats have opened multiple investigations into the president, including subpoenas for Mr. Trump’s tax returns and special counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted report.
Republicans havereferredto the Democrats’ investigations as an “abuse of power.”
The House Judiciary Committee voted to hold Attorney General William P. Barr in contempt Wednesday for not providing the unredacted Mueller report, with Chairman Jerrold Nadler saying afterward: “We are now in a constitutional crisis.”
In response, the president asserted executive privilege over the full Mueller report.
