Mercedes to Sell Swatchmobile in U.S.
DETROIT (AP) _ German automaker Mercedes-Benz plans to sell its micro-compact ``Swatchmobile″ in the United States, a Mercedes executive said.
Mercedes has said the tiny two-seat car, to be jointly produced with the Swiss fashion watch maker Swatch-SMH, will be built in France starting about 1997.
``We will bring it to North America,″ Michael Bassermann, president of Mercedes-Benz North America Inc., told the industry journal Automotive News in an interview at the International Motor Show in Geneva.
Still to be decided is a name for the car and which dealers will get to sell it. Erich Krampe, a member of the Mercedes board, said the public has informally adopted the Swatchmobile name and it may be hard for Mercedes not to use it.
