Local Roundup: Grenier, Charlebois Net 1st Goals in Fitchburg State Victory

FITCHBURG -- Shane Grenier, of Gardner, and Leo Charlebois scored their first collegiate goals to lead the Fitchburg State University men’s soccer team past Becker College, 2-1, in Saturday’s non-conference action at Elliot Field.

With the victory, the Falcons (2-1) stretched their winning streak against Becker (0-4) to eight straight meetings. In goal, sophomore Branton Abbett made 10 saves to earn the win. Up next for Fitchburg State is Wednesday’s 4 p.m. contest at Pine Manor.

The Falcons (1-4) dropped a pair of contests in Saturday’s tri-meet. In the early matchup, sophomore Jessica Peirce paced Fitchburg State with a team-best 15 digs, one kill and one assist, while senior Nicole Sylvester added 10 digs and one assist.

In the later contest, Peirce had another stellar outing for the visitors, posting a game-leading 18 digs and two service aces, while sophomore Paige Anderson chipped in with 11 digs and three kills.

The Falcons will travel to Bridgewater State on Tuesday as they open conference play with a 6 p.m. contest.

Men’s cross country

Fitchburg State

The Falcons placed third as a team, with 93 points, at Saturday’s Worcester City Meet at Moore State Park.

FSU was led by Timothy Sheehy, who placed 16th individually with a time of 29:37.0, while Brandon DiGregorio followed in 25th place, posting a time of 32:12.7 on the five-mile course.

James Casale was next, entering the chute with a time of 32:25.7, while Joe Weston registered a time of 34:02.8. Rounding out the top seven efforts for FSU were Nicholas Sachetta (34:39.7), Samuel Kupperstein (34:52.4) and Colin McShane (34:55.0).

The Falcons will compete in the 2018 Corsair Cross Country Invite on Saturday at noon at UMass Dartmouth.

Women’s cross country

The Falcons were paced by Amy Keley, who placed 31st with a time 29:13.2 over the 6K course, while Savannah Wojcik entered the chute with a time of 30:39.5.

Nyasia Torres, of Fitchburg, followed with a time of 32:28.7, while Jennifer Desilvstre turned in a time of 33:35.0.

Boys’ soccer

Alban Baboci scored the lone goal for North Middlesex, while both Auburn tallies came from Jadan Latino.

Myah Johnson finished with four goals and one assist to lead the Patriots to victory. Scoring one goal each were Ella Green, Raelyn Callahan and Riley Patenaude, while Ella Green (2 assists), Kaelah Marr, Erin Bourgeois and Callahan chipped in with assists.
