Stabbing suspect pleads not guilty to additional charge
MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man pleaded not guilty Thursday to assault for reportedly beating up an inmate in the Skagit County Community Justice Center.
Gerardo Becerra Alvarado, 29, pleaded not guilty to second-degree assault for a Dec. 20 incident in which a jail sergeant reported that Alvarado punched an inmate until he was unconscious, court documents state.
At the time, Alvarado was being held in the Justice Center while awaiting trial in the stabbing of a man in the neck on June 23.
Video surveillance recorded the jail assault, which left the victim with facial fractures and a loose tooth, court documents state.
Alvarado was being held in the jail in connection with a stabbing at a gas station in the area of North LaVenture Road and East College Way in Mount Vernon.
The victim in that incident required surgery, documents state.
Alvarado’s bail is set at $100,000.
