FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Fort Worth police say a man who refused orders to remove his hands from his pockets during a traffic stop has been shot by officers when he pulled out a .45 caliber pistol and began shooting.

Authorities say the man is hospitalized in stable condition with wounds to his wrist and thigh. His name hasn't been immediately released.

No police were injured in the Sunday morning shooting on an Interstate 30 service road.

Police spokesman Brad Perez says Fort Worth officers were responding to help a Tarrant County sheriff's deputy who had pulled over the car and recognized people in the car from a previous incident. Authorities say the other passengers were being removed from the car but the man who started shooting had refused.
